Commercial Underwriter

Location: Hybrid – Braintree, Essex & surrounding region (regular broker visits office-based meetings)

We’re recruiting for a highly respected, long-established MGA looking for a Commercial Underwriter to join their growing team. This is a fantastic opportunity for someone with strong underwriting experience who thrives on building broker relationships and delivering high-quality service across a diverse portfolio.

The Role

You’ll be responsible for underwriting both new and renewal business across a varied product suite, including:

Commercial Combined
Property Owners
Retail Package
Primary & Excess Liability
Contract Works
Contractors’ Plant & Equipment

Day-to-day, you’ll develop and manage relationships with your broker panel, support new business growth, and ensure renewal retention targets are met. This role offers variety and autonomy, with the flexibility to manage your own time while balancing office, broker, and remote work.

Key Responsibilities
Underwrite and process new business to achieve monthly commission/fee targets
Manage renewals with a 90%+ retention focus
Handle mid-term adjustments within agreed timescales
Build strong relationships with new and existing brokers through visits, meetings, and underwriting surgeries
Provide reporting and MI as required
Coach and support junior members of the underwriting team
Always adhere to FCA Conduct Rules, acting with integrity, diligence, and fairness
What They’re Looking For
Solid commercial underwriting experience (Commercial Combined, Property, Liability essential; broader products desirable)
Proven track record of broker development and relationship management
Experience working with delegated authority or underwriting licences
Strong ability to deliver financial targets while maintaining service excellence
Comfortable working in an SME environment where adaptability and teamwork are key
Confident with underwriting systems and administration platforms
